Heart Attack Symptoms

Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States suffers a heart attack. Time is of the essence when you or a loved one has a stroke, and receiving care as soon as possible can reduce the damage done to your heart after a heart attack.

Recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack is one of the best ways to stay ahead of your heart health. If you or someone close to you is experiencing any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately:

  • Intense pressure or squeezing toward the center of the chest
  • Jaw, arm or neck pain on one side or the other
  • Feelings of anxiety or dread
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or burning sensations
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Sweating profusely

Stroke Symptoms

According to the CDC, one in three U.S. adults have at least one condition or habit that puts them at risk of stroke. Patients who arrive at the emergency room within 3 hours of initial stroke symptoms have less chance of disability three months after a stroke than those who receive delayed care. This means strokes are time-critical emergency medical conditions. If you’re concerned that a loved one has experienced a stroke, remember to BE FAST:

  • B – Balance. Is the person suddenly having trouble with balance or coordination?
  • E – Eyes. Is the patient experiencing sudden vision troubles? This includes blurred vision, double vision, or loss of sight in one or both eyes.
  • F – Face drooping. Ask the person to smile. Is one side of their face numb or drooping?
  • A – Arm weakness. Ask the person to raise both arms to the same level. Does one arm drift downward? Is one arm weak or numb?
  • S – Speech difficulty. Ask the person to say a sentence. Are they struggling to speak normally?
  • T – Time to call 911. If the person is experiencing ANY of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.

Recognizing these signs and acting quickly can make all the difference in minimizing the impact of a stroke and potentially saving a life.
